Two Positions Available at NABC: Mobile Poultry Processing Unit

Northwest Agriculture Business Center (NABC) is currently seeking a Processing Technician and a Processing Supervisor for its Mobile Poultry Processing Unit (MPPU). To learn more about the MPPU program, please visit our website.

The Northwest Agriculture Business Center (NABC) supports agriculture businesses in northwest Washington through implementation of value-added agricultural projects. Processing access is critical to the success of small to mid-sized meat production businesses.  NABC’s Mobile Poultry Processing Unit is a custom-designed, three-section modern processing facility on a 26 foot truck frame, serving poultry and rabbit producers.

Poultry Processing Technician

The Processing Technician will perform work in the MPPU, providing professional and sanitary processing services (including cut and wrap), producing a high-quality, safe meat product for local meat producers.

  • Assist Supervisor with MPPU pre-travel and on-site set up as required.
  • Follow directions and work with minimal supervision on a processing line.
  • Work with live poultry (and occasionally rabbits); unload from holding crates and place in restraining devices; perform humane slaughter.
  • Use scalder tank and commercial plucking equipment. Use sharp knives and other instruments requiring attention to safety as needed to properly eviscerate and/or skin carcasses.
  • Work effectively and efficiently in a small slaughter room with co-workers.
  • Frequently lift up to 60 lbs. 
  • Maintain highest level of food safety practices throughout processing.
  • Clean and sanitize facility and equipment.
  • Maintain professionalism and provide excellent customer service.
  • Other tasks as assigned by Processing Supervisor or NABC Project Management staff.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Self-motivated, quick learner
  • Prior poultry handling and processing experience
  • Good communication skills using English
  • Attention to details; efficient but high quality workmanship
  • Experienced in correct /safe use of all tools and equipment
  • Able to work methodically, and stand for long periods in hot or cold environments
  • Work with minimal supervision in a team or independently.
  • Bi-lingual in Spanish and/or Mixtec a plus

Compensation:

  • Compensation is commensurate with experience and qualifications of candidate.
  • Pay range:  $13.50/ hour starting wage + incentive bonuses based on productivity.
  • This position is open for immediate hire, and the hiring process will be open until the position is filled.
  • This is a part-time position.  Hours are flexible. Will operate on a shifting schedule with variable days off and likely overtime.

Poultry Processing Supervisor

The Unit will be driven and overseen by the MPPU Processing Supervisor. The Processing Supervisor will manage and perform work in the MPPU, providing professional and sanitary processing services, including cut and wrap, producing a high-quality, safe, value-added meat product for local poultry producers.

Responsibilities and Requirements:

  • Lead a small crew and fast-paced processing line.
  • Assist NABC staff with training Processing Technicians as required.
  • Work with Processing Technician to perform pre-travel and on-site MPPU set up.
  • Safely drive the truck; maintain records; communicate needed repairs to NABC staff.
  • Lead crew and keep processing line running smoothly.
  • Work with live poultry and rabbits; unload from holding crates and place in restraining devices; perform humane slaughter.
  • Use scalder tank and commercial plucking equipment.
  • Use sharp knives and other instruments requiring attention to safety as needed to properly eviscerate and/or skin carcasses.
  • Work effectively and efficiently in small slaughter room with co-workers.
  • Frequently lift up to 60 lbs. 
  • Maintain highest level of food safety practices throughout processing.
  • Oversee and perform thorough cleaning and sanitizing of facility and equipment.
  • Maintain accurate sanitation, supply and customer records.
  • Anticipate supply needs; communicate in timely manner with NABC office.
  • Maintain professionalism and provide excellent customer service.
  • Other tasks as assigned by NABC Project Management staff.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Must have current Washington State driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Self-motivated, quick learner; follow directions.
  • Possess excellent time-management and punctuality; good work-flow skills
  • Work with minimal supervision in a team or independently.
  • Prior poultry and rabbit handling and processing experience.
  • Good writing and communication and leadership skills using English
  • Possess basic computer skills: email & Internet, word processing, forms, etc.
  • Attention to details; efficient and high quality workmanship
  • Experienced or quick learner in correct /safe use of all tools and equipment
  • Able to work methodically, and stand for long periods in hot or cold environments
  • Non-smoker
  • Multi-lingual in Spanish and/or Mixtec a plus

Compensation:

  • Compensation is commensurate with experience and qualifications of candidate.
  • Pay range:  Min. $16.50/ hour starting wages plus production incentives.
  • This is a part-time position.  Hours are flexible. Will operate on a shifting schedule with variable days off and likely overtime.
